About Azawan Tours

A Berber-owned travel company born in the Sahara, dedicated to sharing the real Morocco with the world.

Our Story

Azawan Tours was founded by Mustapha, a Berber from the village of Tazoulayt in the heart of Morocco’s Drâa-Tafilalet region — the land of golden dunes, ancient kasbahs, and palm-filled valleys.

Growing up between the Sahara Desert and the dramatic gorges of the Drâa Valley, Mustapha spent his childhood listening to his grandfather’s stories around desert campfires, learning the ancient routes that Berber caravans traveled for centuries, and discovering hidden oases that no guidebook has ever mentioned.

As a young man, Mustapha began guiding travelers through the landscapes he knew by heart. He quickly realized that visitors were hungry for something deeper than a bus tour with a megaphone — they wanted to feel Morocco, not just see it. They wanted to sit with a Berber family over mint tea, to hear the real stories behind the kasbahs, to wake up in the Sahara and watch the sunrise paint the dunes gold.

That realization became Azawan Tours.

Why "Azawan"?

“Azawan” means “melody” in Tamazight, the ancient Berber language spoken across North Africa for thousands of years. For Mustapha, Morocco itself is a melody — the rhythm of Berber drums in the desert night, the call to prayer echoing across a medina at dawn, the laughter of children in a mountain village, the silence of the Sahara under a sky full of stars.

Every tour we create is composed like a melody — each day a new note, each landscape a new movement, building toward an experience that stays with you long after the journey ends.

What We Believe

Travel Should Be Personal

Every Azawan Tours journey is 100% private. We do not run group tours, and we do not follow rigid schedules. Your guide adapts the day to your interests, your energy, and your curiosity. Want to spend an extra hour in the Fes medina? Done. Want to skip a planned stop and linger at a viewpoint? No problem. Your trip, your pace.

Authenticity Cannot Be Faked

We are not a call center in a distant city pretending to know Morocco. We are Berbers from the Drâa-Tafilalet region — the very heart of the country. We grew up in the landscapes we show you. The families we introduce you to are our neighbors. The stories we tell are the ones we heard from our grandparents. This is not tourism — it is an invitation into our home.

Comfort Matters

Authentic does not mean uncomfortable. We use modern, air-conditioned vehicles, handpick the best riads and guesthouses, and ensure that every desert camp provides real beds, warm blankets, and good food. You get the raw beauty of Morocco without sacrificing comfort.

Responsible Tourism

As locals, we care deeply about the communities and landscapes we share with visitors. We support local businesses by using family-owned guesthouses, local restaurants, and artisan cooperatives. We respect the environment and encourage our guests to do the same. When you travel with Azawan Tours, your money stays in the communities you visit.

Where We Are Based

Azawan Tours is based in Errachidia, the capital of the Drâa-Tafilalet region in southeastern Morocco. Errachidia sits at the gateway to the Sahara Desert, between the Middle Atlas Mountains to the north and the Erg Chebbi dunes of Merzouga to the south.

This location places us at the geographic heart of Morocco’s most spectacular landscapes — the Ziz Valley, the Todgha and Dades gorges, the Draa Valley, and the Sahara itself. It also means our guides know these roads, these villages, and these desert trails better than anyone.
