The 4 day Sahara desert tour from Marrakech is our most popular private tour — a perfectly paced journey that takes you from the vibrant streets of the Red City deep into the heart of the Sahara Desert and back again.
This round-trip adventure begins with a dramatic crossing of the High Atlas Mountains, descending into the ancient fortified village of Ait Benhaddou. From there, you travel through the fragrant Rose Valley and the winding Dades Gorge before arriving at the towering golden dunes of Erg Chebbi near Merzouga.
The highlight awaits: a sunset camel trek across the dunes to a traditional Berber desert camp, where you will dine under the stars, listen to Berber drumming, and wake to a sunrise that turns the sand ocean into liquid gold.
The return journey takes you through the dramatic Todgha Gorge and along the “Road of 1,000 Kasbahs” before crossing back over the Atlas Mountains to Marrakech. Every moment of this 4 day Morocco Sahara desert tour is designed to immerse you in the raw beauty and authentic culture of southern Morocco.
Your 4 day Sahara desert tour from Marrakech begins with a morning pick-up from your riad. Head south through the High Atlas Mountains on the spectacular Tizi n’Tichka pass, stopping at Berber villages perched on mountain slopes where women sell handmade argan oil.
Descend to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ait Benhaddou and explore this magnificent fortified village — a setting for films like Gladiator and Game of Thrones. Walk through its ancient mudbrick alleyways and enjoy panoramic views from the top.
Continue to Ouarzazate, the gateway to the Sahara, for an optional visit to the Atlas Film Studios. Settle into your accommodation as the southern Moroccan sunset paints the sky.
Overnight: Ouarzazate — hotel or riad (dinner and breakfast included)
After breakfast, drive through the Rose Valley around Kalaat M’Gouna, famous for its annual rose festival and production of rosewater and rose cosmetics. Continue along the “Road of 1,000 Kasbahs” through Skoura’s palm groves.
Enter the Dades Valley, where dramatic rock formations — known locally as “monkey fingers” — rise from the canyon floor. Wind through the serpentine Dades Gorge road, one of Morocco’s most scenic drives.
Continue east past Tinghir and Erfoud to reach Merzouga at the foot of the Erg Chebbi dunes. In the golden light of late afternoon, mount your camel and begin the trek into the desert. As the sun sets behind the dunes, arrive at your camp. Enjoy a traditional Berber dinner of tagine and couscous, music around the campfire, and a night under a sky blazing with stars.
Overnight: Erg Chebbi — Sahara desert camp (dinner and breakfast included)
Rise early to watch the sunrise transform the Erg Chebbi dunes from cool blue to warm gold — one of Morocco’s most unforgettable sights. After breakfast at camp, ride your camel back to Merzouga.
Travel west to the Todgha Gorge, a dramatic canyon where 300-meter limestone cliffs tower above a narrow river passage. Walk into the gorge and feel the scale of this natural wonder.
Continue through the agricultural oasis of Tinghir and into the Dades Valley, arriving at your guesthouse nestled among palm groves and kasbahs. Enjoy a peaceful evening in one of Morocco’s most beautiful valleys.
Overnight: Dades Valley — traditional guesthouse (dinner and breakfast included)
After breakfast, journey west through Ouarzazate with a final photo stop at Ait Benhaddou. Begin the ascent back over the High Atlas Mountains via Tizi n’Tichka, stopping at viewpoints along the way.
Descend into the Haouz Plain as Marrakech comes into view. Your guide will drop you at your riad or hotel in Marrakech by late afternoon, concluding your 4 day Sahara desert tour from Marrakech.
